Being my first blog, I thought it appropriate to write about what I'm about- watch out! Yes, "Blepete" is the transliteration of the greek word found in Col. 2:8 (hence my email handle) for "watch out" or "be careful". Paul uses this strong word to get our attention- to warn us. That's the job of all parents and spiritual parents-- to train their kids to handle all that life has to offer while at the same time warning them about all the things that trip us up or can hurt us.
I'm reading a new book by Kevin Lehman called Outsmarting Yourself. He defines a trauma as any experience that fails to be processed through all the necessary steps in our psyche. So, it's not necessarily a vicious attack by the chainsaw mugger or sexual abuse as a child. It could be as innoculous as bullies cutting in line repeatedly at recess and you having no power to stop it (an illustration he uses).
So what? Well, as I look back over my many years in Christian education- both teaching and administration- and in parenting -- four kids, 8 grandkids and counting -- I am realizing that that it's not just the big bad things that can happen to use but the "little foxes that spoil the vine".
My musings will be in this direction as I enter this 'next phase' of my life teaching college, and whatever else God has for me. Stay tuned (and comment, please!). ....
